RHS Plants for Pollinators

Wild bees and other pollinators are in decline. One way gardeners can help is by planting garden flowers that provide forage for a wide variety of pollinating insects

What is RHS Plants for Pollinators?

Using scientific evidence, our extensive experience and the records of gardeners and beekeepers, we’ve selected a range of year-round flowering Plants for Pollinators to help tackle the decline in pollinator numbers. The lists are reviewed by RHS scientists.

An extensive review began in 2022. Relevant research is being evaluated and observations or requests for changes to the lists are being considered. This may result in plants being added or removed from the lists, which will come into effect in 2025. The previous update was in 2019.

Quick tips for helping pollinators

  • Avoid using pesticides and never spray open flowers
  • Allow lawn ‘weeds’ to flower by mowing less often. Dandelions for instance are an invaluable food source for many pollinators
  • Provide water for pollinators
  • Provide nest sites for wild bees

  • Plant our recommended plants, using the Plants for Pollinators lists or our planting inspiration guides below, to cater for a wide range of pollinators year-round
  • For those that prefer to have more confidence that the plants they purchase do not contain harmful pesticide residues, we have created a list of organic nurseries
