AGM plants have been through a rigourous trial and assessment programme. They are:
P. cembra is a bushy tree to 20m tall, usually narrow in habit, with dark grey-green needles borne in fives, and ovoid cones 6cm long, blue-green when young, later pale brown, and contained large, edible seeds
P. jeffreyi is a large evergreen tree, conical when young, with slender, grey-green needles to 22cm in length, in bundles of three. Cones ovoid, to 20cm in length
P. muricata is a medium-sized evergreen tree developing a narrow, flat-topped crown, with stiff, green to dark grey-green needles to 12cm in length, in pairs. Prickly ovoid cones persist on the tree for many years
P. parviflora is a broadly conical evergreen tree, more spreading when old, with fine, blue-green needles borne in fives, and ovoid light brown cones in autumn
P. patula is an evergreen conifer making a medium-sized tree of elegant habit, with slender, drooping bright green needles to 30cm in length, and contrasting reddish bark. Cones curved, to 10cm in length, pale brown
P. pinaster is an evergreen conifer forming an open-crowned large tree with a long clear trunk. Needles paired, stiff, to 25cm long. Rich brown woody cones to 15cm long remain on the tree for many years
P. pinea is an evergreen conifer making a round-topped evergreen tree with stiff, dark green needles to 15cm long. Cones rounded-ovoid, to 15cm long, shiny light brown. It will reach 15-20m when fully mature
P. radiata is a vigorous evergreen conifer making a large tree to 30m or more, developing a broad rounded crown with maturity. Dense dark green needles in threes, and persistent, conical-ovoid cones to 15cm in length
P. coulteri is a large evergreen tree with a broad, open crown. Stout shoots bear thick, blue-grey needles up to 35cm long, in bundles of three. Massive pale brown cones to 30cm long, with a spine on each scale
P. mugo is a large, spreading, bushy shrub or small tree with short, dark green needles and dark brown, ovoid cones
