The Harlow Carr alpine collection is in desperate need of a new home Harlow Carr Alpine House appeal

Our wonderful assortment of alpines are in urgent need of a new home. Although much loved, the two glasshouses where the alpines are currently displayed are over 40 years old and are quite literally falling apart, due to wear and tear beyond repair.

The great news is that plans are already in place to replace them with one state of the art, safe and modern glasshouse which will be enjoyed by visitors for generations to come.

But for this to go ahead, we need support to help finance the building work. If enough support is received we envisage that the Alpine House could open by spring 2009.

The more members, who support this vital collection the closer we will be to opening a brand new house, fit for the collection.

RHS Biodiversity Appeal

Small tortoiseshell butterfly

Over the next five years, we will be asking you to support our studies into the distribution and ecology of valuable garden wildlife, by contributing your observations and sharing this information at a local level.

We will be increasing our work across RHS gardens, to learn what works in attracting and sustaining garden wildlife, in order to better advise gardeners everywhere.

We will be developing a research programme with partners, to investigate the future place for nature in the urban environment: identifying how our gardens can help support wildlife as the pressure on space in cities increases.

Obviously all this will mean extra costs to the Society, so we are asking you to support the RHS Biodiversity Appeal.

Providing first class resources and facilities for gardeners and gardening

The RHS is the UK's leading gardening charity dedicated to advancing horticulture and promoting gardening. It has been bringing pleasure to those who love horticulture, gardens and gardening for over 200 years.

Horticultural science, plant trials, education and improvements to our gardens, shows and events are at the forefront of the Society’s charitable remit. But as we receive no government funding and members' subscriptions only provide around a quarter of funds needed for our charitable work, we rely on donations, sponsorship and voluntary work to supplement income from our garden operations, flower shows, shops and plant centres.
